Bellingham, WA — Prepare for an extraordinary evening as Black Violin commemorates 20 years of musical innovation with their BV20: Then & Now tour, coming to Mount Baker Theatre on Wednesday, October 9, 2024. This groundbreaking duo, renowned for their genre-defying fusion of classical music and hip-hop rhythms, is set to captivate audiences with live performances across the country once again this fall. From their humble beginnings as highschool orchestra classmates, to being two-time Grammy nominated, internationally touring musicians, the band has a lot to be proud of. Black Violin is also known for being strong advocates for music education. In 2019, Black Violin launched the Black Violin Foundation Inc., a non-profit organization dedicated to empowering youth by providing access to quality music programs in their community.

La Madera Vive! Mascaras de America Latina y pocos otros lugares

An orange and purple poster featuring an image of a carved wooden bird mask with a hooked beak, eating a snake. Text description: [La Madera Vive! Mascaras de America Latina y pocos otros lugares / June 7, 2024 / 5:00-9:00 p.m. / Fine Arts Gallery / 314 East Holly / Bellingham, WA / Masks from Latin America and a few other places / The Wood Lives! Tom Yost's complete collection is at tomyostontheweb.com]

La Madera Vive! Mascaras de America Latina y pocos otros lugares (The Wood Lives! Masks from Latin America and a few other places) is an art exhibition featuring a collection of 20 wooden masks from around the world. The gallery will be open during art walk and available after that by appointment (360-383-0109). Beyond simply an opportunity to show these masks to the public, the exhibit marks the beginning of an effort to donate 2 collections containing 600 masks to a museum or cultural center.

A message from the collector:

600 Masks Seek a Home

I have two collections of masks to donate to an institution where they might be seen and enjoyed by the public.  I would especially like to find a place that serves a Latino community since the majority of masks are from Latin America*.  One collection was built over 30+ years by Pat Alzobaie and the other by me over 25+ years.

The mask traditions of Mexico and other Latin American countries keep alive the roots and history of people and countries, of course.  But mask making is also an artistic endeavor worthy of respect in its own right as a medium equal to sculpting, painting and graphic arts. The two collections together constitute both an artistic treasure as well as a cultural one.

Alzobaie and I have hoped that our collections could offer immigrants in the U.S. a sense of pride in their history and themselves especially when they may be facing discrimination and bigotry.  We have hoped also that non-immigrant citizens of the U.S. will recognize the artistic achievement of Latin American mask making and take an interest in masks as objects that convey more meaning than simply how they have been used traditionally in dances and ceremonies.

Finally, we have hoped that the combined collection will support mask makers as they explore new meanings and uses of masks… in addition to traditional ones.  Our 2 collections contain masks that either expand on traditional designs or introduce completely new ones.  A mask that bears a likeness to ex-President Felipe Calderon (Mexico) and another that purports to show a chupacabra are examples of contemporary mask making.

If you know of a home for these two collections, please contact me, Tom Yost, at (360)383-0109 (talk and text) or at tomyost@hotmail.com.  My collection can be seen at  www.tomyostontheweb.com.

In advance, thanks!

*The 2 collections have a few masks from Southeast Asia, Africa and Canada in addition to Central and South America and Mexico.

That Devil Music at the Lookout Arts Quarry

Alger, WA – On June 28th and 29th That Devil Music returns for its second year at the Lookout Arts Quarry. Two nights of music in genres ranging from funk to black metal will be hosted on the two most beautiful outdoor stages in the Pacific Northwest, with the zenith of the entertainment arriving on Saturday night in the form of a burlesque show with live band accompaniment.

The festival will feature overnight camping, multiple food vendors, swimming, and an incredible line up including Hot Damn Scandal, Dryland, Kitty & The Rooster, Occult Blood, Miles, Ebony & the Deep Cuts, Peste Umbrarum, and more. The burlesque show on Saturday night will be hosted by Lucas Warford of Three for Silver, accompanied by Bang Bang & the Bad Medicine, and will showcase phenomenal dancers from as far away as New Orleans.

General admission tickets are currently available at www.thatdevilmusicfestival.com. $123 gets a full weekend pass (parking and camping included) and day passes are available at $69 dollars per day. Music begins each evening at 7:00pm, with other entertainment sprinkled throughout the day on Saturday.

That Devil Music began last year as a collaboration between LOTH and Hot Damn Scandal. Originally intended to be a one-off event, by the end of the weekend it was obvious that the shared vision of beautiful stages, hedonistic fun, and damn fine music needed to return for another go ‘round. The beautiful all wooden construction of the Stinkeye Saloon and the stunning ode to roots and bones that is LOTH provides the perfect backdrop for the full spectrum of sin and salaciousness that the festival had to offer. This year the festival is expanding to include both stages on both nights, with theatrical processions linking them each evening.

Veterans Art Program: Songwriting with Havilah Rand

June 1st and 2nd, 9am-12pm

During this workshop we will use journaling, collaging, and storytelling to curate narratives that express the life experience of military veterans and their families. Havilah will support participants in transforming these narratives into lyrics and ultimately songs which will be recorded and given to participants at the end of the workshop. LifeSongs serve as historical artifacts of the legacy our veterans have contributed to our society as well as the indelible imprint on our history as Americans and humans. Through the act of recounting life experiences and translating these narratives through songs, the individual is given the opportunity to view and acknowledge their life as a purposeful and exciting story of challenges, successes, hardships and joys. The family and greater community are benefited by reinforcing the memory and legacy of their family members through a modality that is emotional and artistic.

As part of our Veteran Arts program, this class is made possible through grants provided by ArtsWA, The Washington State Legislature, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
