Bellingham “Exit The Ordinary” Music Festival

Exit the ordinary. Enter the extraordinary. Introducing Bellingham Exit, a multi-day, multi-stage, multi-sensory experience held in Downtown Bellingham, Wednesday, Oct. 11 through Sunday, Oct.15. The festival will feature music, art, comedy, dance parties, art vendors and curiosities on the fringe of expectations. Line-up includes: Deltron 3030 (reunited hip-hop project), The Hu (Mongolian metal legends), Monet X Change (RuPaul’s Drag Race), Marc Maron (stand-up comedian and screenwriter), Joe Pera (stand-up comedian), The Pharcyde (classic hip-hop artists), Molly Tuttle & Golden Highway (bluegrass Grammy winner), The Funk Hunters (funky electronic duo) and many more.

EXIT THE ORDINARY

Artists and fans will exit the ordinary with familiar downtown music venues transformed into living, breathing art installations. Bellingham Exit draws comparison to other events that take over cities like South By Southwest, Treefort Music Festival and Iceland Airwaves but is set apart by it’s art-forward approach, themed this year after Bellingham’s “natural world.” Exit’s Core Venues–Wild Buffalo (The Nest Stage), The Shakedown (Mush Room Stage), The Blue Room (Moon Emporium Stage), New Prospect Theater (Deep Sea Comedy Stage)–will be brought to life by WWU professor Mark Kuntz and the team at Bellingham Theatreworks. The inaugural Bellingham Exit includes free concerts in unexpected spaces (a tiki bar, record store, ice cream shop), supported directly by local businesses. More than nine community partners are scheduled to host these DIY, pop-up style shows around the city. Attendees will also find treasures and culture at Bellingham Bazaar, a two-day indie art market, produced by BE.

TICKETING / RSVP

A limited 200 festival passes will be available for Bellingham Exit offering fans priority access to all events throughout the week. Individual tickets will also be available, as well as various “free with RSVP” events throughout downtown.

EVENT SERIES DETAILS

Interested parties can expect to find detailed information for individual events promoted digitally through the Bellingham Exit website and social media.

Veterans Art Program was a Success!

We are delighted to announce that the pilot program cycle for our Veterans Art Program is complete and was a huge success!

Allied Arts of Whatcom County secured funding earlier in 2023 from the Washington State Arts Commission’s Wellness, Arts and Military grant program to launch our new Veterans Art Program in June. The mission of this program is to offer free art classes to our military-connected community taught by our local teaching artists. We aim to provide a comfortable, creative space for veterans, military members, guard, reserves, their spouses or partners and caregivers to discover the creative arts and explore artistic expression as a form of self-care.

During this first program cycle, local teaching artists taught participants how to carve stone, use various wood finishing techniques and the basics of watercolor landscape painting. Participants had access to art materials, instruction and studio space over a three-week session that met once a week for three hours at a time.

Jacquie Bresadola, of Pacé Atelier and our teaching instructor for Intro to Stone Carving gave a brief overview of the history of stone carving throughout the ages. She introduced students to some introductory geology, including various stone properties. She taught proper tool usage, finishing techniques and helped her students understand this unique subtractive sculpting method. Students carved on white and pink alabaster and green chlorite.

“I was thrilled to see so many veterans experiencing the joy of stone carving for the first time,” remarks Anne Evenson, program coordinator and wife to an Operation Iraqi Freedom Army veteran. “What was so amazing was how naturally every student took to this ancient, challenging medium. I was so excited to see all the forms emerge from the stones as if by magic!”

Steven “Ray” Raymond taught Slab to Fab: An Artistic Interpretation on Wood Finishing. Throughout three classes, students learned the significance of wood finishing to protect and enhance the beauty of raw wood surfaces. Ray taught his students how to transform raw wood using basic finishing techniques like sanding, distressing wood, preparing stains and applying natural finishes like Shellac and Beeswax.

“Art doesn’t just have one answer, one way or technique,” said Eryn Ross, a U.S. Air Force Veteran who took the wood finishing class. “Ray allowed us to try different methods and experiment without any pressure and create our own goal.”

In the Watercolor Landscape Painting & Introduction class, long-time local artist Michael Heath helped students discover the magic of watercolor painting by demonstrating composition and layout and teaching color theory and value studies. Participants learned different watercolor techniques like mixing color, wet on wet, washes and glazing using just three brushes and a limited color palette.

“The class meant a lot to people for many different reasons,” said Beth Roberson, spouse of a Vietnam combat Veteran, local artist and watercolor student. “It was delightful to meet everyone, and I thought it was a very worthwhile thing to have available to veterans and their families. Art is a great medium for self-expression and personal growth!”

Participants of the Veterans Art Program ranged in age from 25 to 95 and everywhere in between. We had combat veterans, spouses, partners, caregivers and other military-connected individuals from every military branch and service era.

Allied Arts is working hard to secure more grant funds to continue this program that we feel this exceptional community needs and deserves. To stay updated on upcoming classes for military-connected individuals, please visit our Veterans Art Program webpage and sign up for our email list.

“The Veterans Art Program was an excellent opportunity to learn a new skill and find camaraderie with others,” said Adam Brendgard, a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran and rookie stone carver. “Thanks to these workshops, I am more patient, calm, and confident in my new hobby and day-to-day life!”

For over 40 years, Allied Arts of Whatcom County has been a leader in fostering and supporting the local arts scene and serves more than 50,000 people annually. Allied Arts improves the cultural health and vitality of the community through community events involving visual artists and musicians, sponsorship of exhibits and programs focused on local artists, extensive arts education in local schools and public advocacy for the arts.

Juried Exhibit August 2023: Nature’s Kingdom

Exhibition: August 4-26, 2023

Gallery Hours: Tuesday – Saturday 11am – 4pm

Opening Reception: Friday, August 4, 6pm-9pm at 1213 Cornwall Ave, Bellingham, WA 98225

Allied Arts of Whatcom County presents our August 2023 gallery show "Nature's Kingdom", an exploration of the abundant forms, colors, and materials of the natural world. This show features the works of Bluejay Blackburn, Lori Hill, Michael Colahan, Rachel Simpson, Sacha Bliese, Scott Ward, and Vikki Jackson, each showing their own unique view on the natural world.

Vikki Jackson paints scenes using nature as a muse, taking liberties with details while simplifying the subject.

Scott Ward creates illustrative oil paintings that are colorful, clean, whimsical, surreal, and uplifting, allowing each piece to tell a story.

Sacha Bliese crafts hand fabricated, one-of-a-kind gold jewelry featuring precious and semi-precious gemstones.

Rachel Simpson focuses on nature, space, marine-life, and winged animals in both mixed-media on canvas and in pointillism paintings. Recently, she's worked on winged animals from birds to insects, that shine under the daylight, then sparkle under UV-lighting. Enjoy the wild and wonder of her whimsical art.

Michael Colahan presents a photography gallery focused on the Marine Mammals of the Salish Sea and bringing awareness and education to maintaining the environment that we share with them. It is his hope that through his work the natural beauty of these iconic animals will be as inspiring to others.

Lori Hill creates bold oil paintings of local scenes and our colorful zoological friends.

Bluejay Blackburn mixes impressionism and realism in painting whimsical yet ominous subjects.

Juried Exhibit July 2023: Surface to Strata

July 7th – 29th, 2023

Opening Reception: July 7th, 2023 – 6pm to 9pm
Location: 1213 Cornwall Ave, Bellingham 98225

Allied Arts of Whatcom County presents “Surface to Strata”, our 2023 Juried Gallery Series exhibit for July. “Surface to Strata” is an exploration of texture and depth in the pursuit of meaning, where each artist and each piece exhibits strong layered qualities. This show features the work of Jeana Esser-Lang, Kevin Hoover, Lucia Enriquez, Marjie Miller, Melissa Morales Rush, and Renee Noelle Cheesman.

Jeana Esser-Lang’s paintings reflect edgy, stylized and vibrant fun! Sage takes liberties with color, form, and space to create magic in her artworks.

Kevin Hoover creates original abstract painting, expressions infused with varying layers of texture, color, pattern and motion, informed by the natural art and architecture of the world itself.

Lucia Enriquez makes work that has to do with journey, myth and dream. Personal experience, immigration and family history drive a lot of her compulsion for art, and her artistic process sublimates these into larger social, environmental and cultural issues. In the last few years she has included pre-colonial Philippine iconography, stories and world view in her work, an effort to get at the richness of her culture of origin in its pre-colonial state. She uses both physical and digital means of manipulating and creating elements of her art. The digital components include emulations of traditional art materials and photography, as well as particle curve visualizations and architectural 3-d renderings.

Marjie Miller creates encaustic art on wood panels, wood blocks and corrugated cardboard. Encaustic is hot beeswax with dammar resin fused into a substrate.

Melissa Morales Rush creates fine art with a fluid flare, in a variety of mediums, that are inspired by the intrinsic elements of nature, the psyche, emotion, and the chaos of life that flows through and connects us all.

Renee Noelle Cheesman’s  art explores characteristics of contemporary American culture. The projects are intended to provoke conversations, facilitate self-reflection, and to comment about the “American” social and cultural landscape.

Allied Arts is a non-profit gallery, all proceeds from sales go towards supporting the arts in our community.
