Zotshee’s Screenwriting Workshop

If you’d like to learn how to write a Hollywood movie, Aubrey M. Horton will be teaching a private series of screenwriting workshops at Western Washington University this fall in Bellingham, WA.

Horton is an award-winning screenwriter. He received his MFA in screenwriting from UCLA film school (“the Harvard of screenwriting”). He’s consulted on projects for Warner Bros., Paramount, and HBO. Horton has had six development deals and has worked as a freelance story analyst for the Dick Clark Film Group. He’s doctored scripts for five screenwriters who’ve won national competitions. He’s also edited five books for the Directors Guild and has worked as a judge for two national screenwriting competitions.

In the fall Horton will teach two private screenwriting workshops at the Viking Union. There’s a Saturday 4-week course and a Sunday 8-week course. This workshop series has produced numerous screenplays which have received national recognition in the top screenwriting competitions, e.g., Nicholl, Chesterfield, Austin Heart of Film, and CineStory.

A workshop participant won First Place in the Hollywood Symposium Screenplay Contest. Writers have landed WGA agents and have garnered development/option deals with the major studios, e.g., Paramount Pictures and Warner Brothers.

Horton’s Saturday 4-week course starts September 30 – from 2 to 5 p.m. – at WWU’s Viking Union. The tuition fee is $380. This is an introductory course which covers the basic nuts and bolts of screenwriting. Workshop participants will learn proper screenplay format. The primary focus will be on learning how to write cinematic scenes vis-a-vis professional standards. Topics covered will include structure, dialogue, commercial storytelling, character definition, and dramatic intensity.

Horton’s Sunday 8-week workshop starts October 1st – from 2 to 5 p.m. – at WWU’s Viking Union. The tuition fee is $580. Participants will write a feature-length screenplay. The emphasis will be on the storytelling elements which Hollywood demands of its writers. You’ll be taught the “secrets of the trade.”

The primary focus will be on story transfer – i.e., on learning how to enhance the storytelling process with solid structure, dramatic pacing, and believable character development.

Enrollment is limited to eight slots. No writing sample is required. Applications are first reviewed before acceptance. You do not have to be enrolled in college to take this course. Applications are due September 23rd.

If you’d like to apply for a workshop, please email:

Remember to include your postal mailing address and your phone # in your request.

Upcoming All-Ages Workshops at Make.Shift!

Hello! My name is Beth, and I am the Education Director at Make.Shift Art Space. I am reaching out to share some exciting news and information about Make.Shift’s upcoming Community Education Workshops happening in June!

Make.Shift hosts our all-ages workshops in our lovely Open Art Studio (at Make.Shift, 306 Flora St) every Saturday, from 1-3 pm. During our workshops, you’ll have the opportunity to delve into various art forms with experienced local artists, musicians, and educators who are excited to share these techniques with others! These classes will be a wonderful way to not only learn new skills and explore different artistic styles, but also to connect with other new and experienced artists in our community. Attached in this email are flyers for each workshop.

Our workshops are generally $10, but there are upcoming workshops in which we require an additional fee to cover the costs of materials used and to relieve our facilitators. However, no one will ever be turned away for lack of funds!  Here’s what we have planned for this month:

Saturday, June 3rd from 1-3pm is our Techniques in Pouring workshop with local artist, Esmeralda Olguin
This workshop will explore the art of pouring acrylic paint onto a canvas to create unique and abstract designs. During this workshop, participants will learn the various techniques and methods involved in creating a pour painting, such as paint mixing, pouring mediums, and the tools used in the process. A creative and hands-on experience for beginners and experienced artists alike! Register here.

Saturday, June 10th, from 1-3pm is our Ableton 101 workshop taught by local musician and producer Michael Buchanan!
This workshop will be an introduction to Ableton Live 11 Suite, designed to give a basic overview of the software. We will be going over techniques for sound design, recording, and arranging music. This class is perfect for beginners, but those with previous experience are welcome to come to learn new tricks and fill in any gaps of knowledge. Register here.

Saturday, June 17th, from 1-3 pm is our Crochet Squares workshop taught by our Education Director Beth Girma!
Join us for another crochet workshop for experienced and beginner crafters alike! This workshop will focus on crocheting a variety of granny squares including multicolor, basic patterns, flower patterns, and more! In addition to this, we will cover other styles of crochet decorations that include checkered patterns and charms like clouds and cherries to brighten up your piece! Squares are a manageable way to create different clothing and accessories like simple tops, bags, blankets, and hats! Register here.

Saturday, June 24th, and July 1st from 1-3 pm is our DIY Screenprinting workshop taught by local artist Sarah Kindl!
Have you ever wanted to make t-shirts or patches for your band, but didn’t know how? This two-session course will introduce you to the basics of screenprinting where you will learn how to coat, expose, and print from home. Bring a shirt, bag, or anything you’d like to print on!

Register for (only) part 1 here.
Register for both classes (recommended) here.

We have much more in store for this summer’s workshops, so stay up to date by checking our website’s calendar to get involved. We are also available to teach workshops in schools and community programs! If you have events we can promote, feel free to send them to us and we will share them amongst our circles as well.
