All Access Whatcom proposal

All Access Whatcom is a proposal with the mission of providing greater and equal opportunities for everyone to arts, heritage, and science throughout Whatcom Country!

The proposal is a publicly funded program that could expand community access to cultural programs in STEM, heritage, and the arts through a 0.1% increased sales or equal amount through property tax. In Whatcom County, it is estimated that $6.3 million per year through sales tax could be raised for All Access with a little under 60% of funds coming from Bellingham residents ($3.7 million). This tax increase would provide funds to increase public access to cultural activities, expand cultural education activities for public school students, and provide sustainable funding for not-for-profit science, heritage, and arts organizations. We are looking for your support to move forward with our proposal to the county commission. You can learn more at Inspiration League’s All Access Whatcom info page.

Join us for a group meeting with a couple of other representatives of the cultural community at the Allied Arts Thrift Store: 1213 Cornwall Ave, Bellingham on Monday, May 20 at 4:00pm. Unable to attend? No worries, we would be happy to schedule a date and time more convenient for you. We look forward to discussing this amazing opportunity for the residents of Whatcom County and increasing access to arts, heritage, and science programs. We will share how Tacoma, Olympia and King County have already adopted Cultural Access programs and our own visions for Whatcom county.

If you are already familiar with the program and want to be included on the list of supporters please sign the petition!

Veterans Art Program: Songwriting with Havilah Rand

June 1st and 2nd, 9am-12pm

During this workshop we will use journaling, collaging, and storytelling to curate narratives that express the life experience of military veterans and their families. Havilah will support participants in transforming these narratives into lyrics and ultimately songs which will be recorded and given to participants at the end of the workshop. LifeSongs serve as historical artifacts of the legacy our veterans have contributed to our society as well as the indelible imprint on our history as Americans and humans. Through the act of recounting life experiences and translating these narratives through songs, the individual is given the opportunity to view and acknowledge their life as a purposeful and exciting story of challenges, successes, hardships and joys. The family and greater community are benefited by reinforcing the memory and legacy of their family members through a modality that is emotional and artistic.

Give Big for Allied Arts!

On May 7th & 8th help us raise $30,000 to support the expansion of Since Time Immemorial teaching artists in Whatcom County. Since Time Immemorial curriculum has been required in Washington state public schools since 2015. Our teaching artists, including Jason LaClair and Michelle DeAsis, have been working with Bellingham schools to implement hands-on curriculum to connect students with local indigenous history, art and culture. Money raised will help us hire additional teaching artists and bring them to more schools throughout the county.

Veterans Art Program: Acrylic Painting with Lori VanEtta April 13th, 20th, and 27th 1-4

We are thrilled to announce our new arts education series for veterans and military-connected individuals in the community! The Allied Arts Veterans Art Program partners with local teaching artists to offer free art classes to veterans, military members, guard, reserves, their spouses/partners and caregivers. Our mission is to provide a comfortable, creative space for our participants to discover the creative arts and explore artistic expression as a form of self-care.

Come join local artist Lori VanEtta to learn how to create an abstract painting. You can be a rank beginner or someone who wants to learn more from her years of painting experience. She will explain the differences between types of acrylic paints and useful mediums. She will introduce basic design armatures as a foundation to a successful painting. We will review color mixing and ways to keep your colors bright. You will learn several tricks for layering paint, adding texture and just having fun. All supplies will be provided. You just need to come with an open attitude and some old clothing that you can spill on without worries. Let’s play!
