Allied Arts of Whatcom County is delighted to present a compelling array of artistic talents for the annual Whatcom READS Art Challenge, in collaboration with the Bellingham and Whatcom Libraries' Whatcom READS program. Local artists embarked on an inspiring journey inspired by this year's chosen book, Red Paint: The Ancestral Autobiography of a Coast Salish Punk by Sasha taqwšeblu LaPointe. Featured artists include: Akiko Victorson, Jason LaClair, Lucia Enriquez, Justin Thomsen and Anita Merina. Applications to participate in the exhibition are available at https://www.alliedarts.org/exhibits/#whatcom-reads

Akiko Victorson presents the captivating world of Shodo – the art of Calligraphy, where the act of writing characters beautifully goes beyond aesthetics, evolving into a profound form of expression using the elegant combination of black ink and brushwork.

Anita Merina proudly showcases the modern fine art glass and jewelry, expertly fused, cast, and sculpted to capture the essence of color, texture, shape, and form.

Justin Thomsen creates poignant and evocative watercolor paintings with a keen eye for atmosphere.

Lucia Enriquez has been creating art inspired by indigenous myths and creation stories and is now expanding this exploration to delve into the subtle energies and the intangible aspects of nature and the landscapes that surrounds them.

Vina Brown is greatly influenced by culture, land, sky, and water, presented in an authentic Indigenous jewelry brand, Copper Canoe Woman, that creates modern on–trend pieces in house on Lhaq'temish territory in acrylic, wood, abalone, furs, hide, and more.

These installations call attention to the fabrics that adorn and comfort us. Investigating the relationships with them and their connection to the environment. Community Accelerator Grant to Distribute $10MM in Unrestricted Funds in 2024

Building on the historic Community Accelerator Grant program pilot in 2023, ArtsFund and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation come together again to offer a second round of funding to Washington’s arts and cultural nonprofits.

In 2024, the program will distribute $10 million in unrestricted funding to organizations across Washington whose primary mission is to produce or support arts and culture activities. This second round of funding builds on the 2023 program, which provided a total of $10 million to 671 organizations and will continue to prioritize organizations that center BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities, and those located in rural communities.

ArtsFund and the Paul G. Allen Family Foundation recognize the deep impact of the cultural sector and have committed to this second year of funding in order to more deeply support organizations’ ability to invest in their missions and essential roles serving communities across Washington State.
