“Ona” or “Selknman” was one of the ancient cultures settled on the Island of Tierra del Fuego, Argentina. Their first contact with the Spanish was in 1580, and they lived on Tierra del Fuego until the 20th century. David Syre was inspired by the myths, games, dances, clowns, invisible beings, tricksters, rituals and body art of the Onas. The rhythm in this painting recalls the shapes drawn by the Onas who dance in rituals. The color in this work refers to the land on which the Onas live. It is the color of trees, leaves and soil.
