Call to Artists
Read the guidelines below and apply on our website or use the PDF form here
What is Creative Spaces? Allied Arts of Whatcom County, in partnership with the Downtown Bellingham Partnership, is launching Creative Spaces, a juried show of temporary art exhibits and installations that will enliven the darkened windows of vacated facilities downtown with art from the community and create a series of attractions throughout the area. Artists will be matched up with local property owners based on the artist’s requests and the property owner’s specifications.
Open to: Residents of Whatcom County and surrounding region. Individual artists, artist groups and non-profit organizations. Creative Spaces projects may be two-dimensional or three-dimensional and may use any medium. Be creative and help us by describing in detail your plans for presenting your art form. There is no limit to the quantity or size of art pieces you may submit. We will do our best to match artists with the most appropriate spaces. Non-profits may submit for a promotional display in a window, but the promoted event or program must be arts related.
Publicity: The Downtown Bellingham Partnership will include your Creative Spaces art site on the map for the monthly Downtown Art Walk. Allied Arts of Whatcom County will also prepare and send out exhibit information via press releases, website, and social media.
Selection Process: Creative Spaces participants will be juried by representatives from Allied Arts of Whatcom County. Participation in previous Allied Arts juried shows or festivals does not exempt you from the jury process nor does it guarantee your acceptance this year.
Application process and show timeline: Apply anytime of the month. Within two weeks of submitting your application, you will be contacted with more information regarding exhibit space and show month availability. Exhibits will open on the first Friday of the month and will close the last Saturday of the month.
Fees: There is no fee for submission, however, a membership with Allied Arts is greatly appreciated and ensure we can continue to provide this and other programs.
Site Specific Installations: If you are interested in doing a site-specific art installation piece instead of displaying framed art, we can work with you individually to preview the space before you plan your installation. Please indicate in the application if you will need to make arrangements to see available sites.
Art Sales: The sale of art pieces will be coordinated by the staff of Allied Arts of Whatcom County. Allied Arts will retain a 40% commission on all sales.
Delivery, Pick-up and Installation of Artwork: Artists will be responsible for moving your art in and out of the temporary space. You will also need to provide your own installation supplies. Nothing may be hung from the walls or ceiling. Works may only be viewable from the outside of the building and the building may not be open to the public.
Access to the Creative Space:
You will need to be prepared for moving your art in and out of the space within a specific time frame coordinated with the property owner and a program liaison. These spaces will be locked and secured. You may be required to sign a temporary space use contract.
