Call for Artists
Creative Spaces
What is Creative Spaces? Allied Arts of Whatcom County, in partnership with the Downtown Bellingham Partnership and the City of Bellingham, is launching Creative Spaces, a juried show of temporary art exhibits and installations that will enliven the darkened windows of vacated facilities along Cornwall Avenue with art from the community and create an attraction along this primary downtown corridor. Artists will be matched up with local property owners based on the artist’s requests and the property owner’s specifications.
This project is part of an upcoming effort by the City of Bellingham to update the City Center Master Plan, the guiding document for downtown revitalization. The City is asking artists to assist in engaging the community in thinking about what is special and unique about downtown, and to help create a vision for the future of the City Center. Creative Spaces is the first of many opportunities for public participation in this process.
Open to: Residents of Whatcom County and surrounding region. Both individual artists and groups are encouraged to participate.
Publicity: The Downtown Bellingham Partnership will include your Creative Spaces art site on the map for the monthly Downtown Art Walk.
Selection Process: Creative Spaces participants will be juried by representatives from Allied Arts of Whatcom County, the Downtown Bellingham Partnership, and the City of Bellingham. Priority will be given to artwork that focuses on downtown as a subject matter, such as:
* Historic representations and downtown memories of the past;
* Images that evoke the character of downtown – What makes our downtown special? What are some problem areas?
* Work that illustrates a creative vision for the future of downtown;
* Images of downtown landmarks, businesses or people;
* Other downtown subjects of the artists interpretation.
Participation in previous Allied Arts juried shows or festivals does not exempt you from the jury process, nor does it guarantee your acceptance this year.
Application process: If you are interested in showing your work in Creative Spaces please have your portfolio and application in by the 15th of each month. You will be notified within one week whether or not your application has been accepted. At that time you will be assigned a venue and show month.

If you would like your image CDs or flash drive returned you must include a self addresses stamped envelope with your application.
Site Specific Installations:
If you are interested in doing a site-specific art installation piece instead of hanging farmed art, we can work with you individually to preview the space before you plan your installation. Please indicate in the application if you will need to make arrangements to see available sites.
