2011 Juried Artist Series: Our Natural World
August 5th – 27th, 2011

The Allied Arts 2011 Juried Artist series continues with Our Natural World, featuring the work of Rick Bulman, Andrea Gabriel, Joe Miles and Laurie Potter.

Our Natural World is a show featuring the work of three artists: one watercolor painter, one oil painter, and one woodworking artist, all of whom present a different take on our shared natural world.

Andrea Gabriel has worked as an illustrator and graphic artist for over fifteen years, with publications ranging from corporate clients to children’s books. In keeping with her love of artistic challenge, she has recently returned to her first love of paint, canvas and paper. For Our Natural World, she will show watercolors painted on location during a recent trip to Mongolia.

Laurie Potter’s paintings feature various subject matters while consistently focusing on rich color and striking compositions. From mixed media watercolor and acrylic paintings of wildlife to pastel landscapes and botanicals, her paintings are vibrant representations that portray her love of the natural world.

Joe Miles is obsessed with crafting unique hardwood furniture that will last for generations. His selection of chairs, desks and tables are made of handpicked premium hardwood, provided by mother nature. The unique characteristics and variations in grain and color are important elements in his design.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ Inside the Box Series will feature work from Rick Bulman. He bases his work on ethnic designs from many cultures. His jewelry and small sculptures are a combination of one of a kind creations and cast pieces made from molds of original sculptures.

2011 Juried Artist Series: Fringes of Society
July 1st – 29th, 2011

The Allied Arts 2011 Juried Artist series continues with Fringes of Society, featuring the work of Iain Davidson, Larry Gilbert, Nate Marohn, and Scott Williams. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday, July 1st, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artists from 6:30pm to 7pm on opening night.

Fringes of Society is a show featuring the work of four artists; three photographers and one mixed media artist. They have all created work which pronounces beauty, humor, and dignity in the inanimate world all around us.

Scott Williamson considers himself to be a nature photographer, and finds inspiration from the wilderness as well as from unexpected mundane objects. He finds order in chaos and often photographs alleys, parking lots, and abandoned buildings as part of his art work.

Nate Marohn uses elements of traditional media as well as digital tools to create his work. Most of Marohn’s work involves landscapes or architecture as he has always been fascinated by the expanse of nature and the role of people within it. The natural beauty of the Pacific Northwest also has been a strong influence in his work.

Larry Gilbert’s photography explores the brilliant color, intriguing form and quiet moments in our everyday lives. His photographs have been taken around the world in varying locations from urban centers to open farmland.

Iain Davidson prides himself on using the form and fashion of technology to create new perspectives on how to look at life, the environment, and the world around us. Creating an effect which is subtle and encourages the viewer to look closer and see intentional shifts in perspective or views is his goal. After many years working in the computer recycling industry, he has discovered many opportunities for creative and unique forms of outdated technology based art.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ Inside the Box Series will feature work from Karin Mueller. She completes pieces of re-invented art. Whether it is a vintage tin made into a clock, old fabric sewn into a collage or used table legs completing a bird shrine, she tries to create art that is compelling to those who are playful at heart.

This show will run from July 1st to 29th. Allied Arts is a non-profit organization; proceeds from sales go to support the arts in our community. For more information visit www.alliedarts.org or contact: Katy Borden, Artist Services Coordinator at 676-8548 x5 or katy@alliedarts.org.

2011 Juried Artist Series: Delicate Strength
June 3rd – 25th, 2011

Opening Reception: Friday, June 3rd, 6pm - 10pm
Gallery Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 12 to 5pm

The Allied Arts 2011 Juried Artist series continues with Delicate Strength, featuring the work of Yvette Neumann and Enid Wilson. Delicate Strength is a show featuring the work of two women painters who both create abstract works which utilize soft colors and construct compositions that command the room.

Enid Wilson is most known for her fine print-making and paper goods, but she has always had a love for painting as well. Though she does create a mix of small and large works, her heart lies in making the paintings on a larger scale due to the freedom of movement and gestural quality that is achieved.

Yvette Neumann creates large scale abstract works that are an expression of the physical world around her. Her work reflects an ever-evolving recognition and exploration of form and color to gently arouse an emotional response to physical features in their most primitive and pure state.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ Inside the Box Series will feature work from Phil and Patti Rose. Their jewelry uses semi-precious stones, gold, and silver to create beautiful, wearable works of art.

2011 Juried Artist Series: Color Theory

February 4th – 28th, 2011

Opening Reception: Friday, February 4th, 6pm - 10pm

Gallery Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 12 to 5pm

The Allied Arts 2011 Juried Artist series continues with Color Theory, featuring the work of Phillip Hanson, Kat Schneider and Mary Dudley. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday February 4th, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artists from 6:30pm to 7pm on opening night.

"Color Theory” is a show featuring three painters united by vibrant colors and unique compositions. Each artist displays a unique perspective of the physical and intrapersonal world we live in.

Phillip Hanson began as an amateur painter and now uses his hobby of photography to create colorful paintings of local landscapes. His work has been featured in art shows, events with the Whatcom Art Guild as well as in conjunction with self-published literary works. Currently, Hanson is working on a photographic collection that includes short stories and poems.

Kat Schneider gazes towards the future in a collection of paintings that ask, "What’s Next?” She uses the immediacy of paint sticks, water soluble paints and canvas to generate internal conversations with viewers.

Mary Dudley is an abstract painter and printmaker influenced by nature and society. Dudley utilizes texture, color and architectural forms to reveal complexities of the visual and hidden world. Her current works aim to reflect society’s obsession with materialism.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ Inside the Box Series will feature work from Naoko Kawakita. Her jewelry intertwines semi-precious stones and sterling silver wire into elaborate, delicate patterns.

This show will run from February 4th – 28th. Allied Arts is a non-profit organization; proceeds from sales go to support the arts in our community. For more information visit www.alliedarts.org or contact: Katy Borden, Artist Services Coordinator at 676-8548 x5 or katy@alliedarts.org.

2011 Juried Artist Series: Up for Interpretation

January 7th - 29th, 2011

Opening Reception: Friday, January 7th, 6pm - 10pm

The Allied Arts 2011 Juried Artist series kicks off with Up for Interpretation, featuring the work of Gary Armstrong, George Jartos, and Trevor Smith. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday January 7th, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artists from 6:30pm to 7pm on opening night.

At first all of these artists’ work may seem whimsical or silly. But look deeper and the themes you discover might surprise you.

Gary Armstrong is a metal artist whose forms include human forms and expression, political commentary, whimsy, celebratory events and epic iconography. Armstrong delights in embedding inside jokes, visual puns and other obscurities within his work, and he is especially thankful for the few who spot them.

George Jartos has worked as a gag, illustration and editorial cartoonist for over 30 years. Though George’s work is fanciful, and at times absurd, it symbolizes subjects and events of our daily lives. These subjects are put forth to the viewer with little disguise and the result is hilarious and eye opening.

Trevor Smith approaches all of his paintings with a sense of humor. Influences like Looney Tunes and illustrators Edward Gorey and Maurice Sendak create, for him, a worl that is best at it’s most absurd. Smith seeks to create art infected with hubris and humiliation.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ Inside the Box Series will feature work from Jayme Curley. She describes her work at sculptural watercolors in low fire clay.

This show will run from January 7th – 29th. Allied Arts is a non-profit organization; proceeds from sales go to support the arts in our community. For more information visit www.alliedarts.org or contact: Katy Borden, Artist Services Coordinator at 676-8548 x5 or katy@alliedarts.org.

2010 Juried Artist Series: Visual Poetry

December 3rd thru 31st, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, December 3rd, 6pm - 10pm
Gallery Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 12 to 5pm

The Allied Arts 2010 Juried Artist series continues with Visual Poetry, featuring the work of artist Victor Flovera. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday December 3rd, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artists from 6:30pm to 7pm on opening night.

Victor Flovera’s latest project, Visual Poetry, is an important sensorial exercise in which the word of the poet becomes the source of influence for this new body of paintings. Selected Latin-American writers and poets such as: Octavio Paz, Josefa Parra and Pablo Neruda have inspired this project.

"These visual interpretations are not necessarily a direct depiction of each poem, but rather an association of elements and concepts as well as vivencias or personal experiences.
This is a process where the intrinsic force of the poetry teases my senses and seduces my mind. This poetry extracts my memories, recalls my name."

This new body of work represents a new genre of painting being explored by Flovera, surrealism.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ Inside the Box Series will feature work from Isha Daniels. Daniels’ jewelry uses semiprecious stones, gold and silver to create miniature works of art.

This show will run from December 3rd to 31st. Allied Arts is a non-profit organization; proceeds from sales go to support the arts in our community. For more information visit www.alliedarts.org or contact: Katy Borden, Artist Services Coordinator at 676-8548 x5 or katy@alliedarts.org.

2010 Juried Artist Series: Lay of the Land
November 5th thru 27th, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, November 5th, 6pm - 10pm
Gallery Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 12 to 5pm

The Allied Arts 2010 Juried Artist series continues with "Lay of the Land” featuring John D’Onofrio, Jeff Lindeman, Vikki Jackson, and Lisa McShane. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday November 5th, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artists from 6:30pm to 7pm on opening night.

"Lay of the Land” is a show of four artists who capture our beautiful environment on film and canvas. Each uses their perception to capture the snippets of our surroundings that interest them most.

John D’Onofrio’s background as a painter has informed his work in photography by creating a freedom to concentrate on form, texture and color independent of more typically representational approaches. John strives to offer compositions that exist outside of the familiar and does this by deliberately obscuring elements such as scale and perspective.

Jeff Lindeman has been photographing the Northwest Region of Washington since 1988 and enjoys this area because of the wide array of landscapes we have. His photographs capture the elements of our environment at their most raw and serene moments.

Lisa McShane’s oil paintings capture the landscapes of Washington State. In northwest Washington she captures the crystal clear light, early dawn, cold northern lakes, fog and long shadows of winter. In eastern Washington, Lisa focuses on the stark beauty of this exposed, eroded land using a saturated, luminous light so that she can chase and give form to her memories.

Vikki Jackson prefers to paint in acrylics because the fluidity and flexibility of it allows her to build layer upon layer and intermix paint with texture. Vikki’s paintings mainly focus on the physical aspects of the natural world. Her work is presented in a stylized manner to express the motion, temperature and emotion within an image.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ new Inside the Box Series will feature work from Mieko Takahashi. Mieko designs her jewelry to reflect the beauty of nature and her goal is to create timeless
classic and elegant jewelry that will look beautiful on every woman.

This show will run from November 5th to 27th. Allied Arts is a non-profit gallery, proceeds from sales go to support the arts in our community. For more information contact: Katy Borden, Artist Services Coordinator at 676-8548 x5 or katy@alliedarts.org.

2010 Juried Artist Series: Aesthetic Expressions
October 1st thru 30th, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, October 1st, 6pm - 10pm
Gallery Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 12 to 5pm

The Allied Arts 2010 Juried Artist series continues with "Aesthetic Expressions” featuring Yvette Neumann, Craig Dunstan-McGrail and Sheila Sondik. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday October 1st, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artists from 6:30pm to 7pm on opening night.

"Aesthetic Expressions” is a show of three artists who see the world around them in their own individual way. Etchings, manipulated photographs and paintings shown are abstracted representations of this world, but all have a certain familiarity with any viewer.

Yvette Neumann has always been fascinated by nature and all its immeasurable variances. With her paintings, Yvette extracts imagined circumstances from real subjects, drawing ideas from plant life, rock formations, moving water, animal features and the like. Her work is the result of ideas and impressions about her own personal life journey thus far.

Craig Dunstan-McGrail’s images explore the endless potential of painting with light using a camera, computer and finally ink on paper. Using imagery taken from nature and man made structures, he works to define his vision with the use of lines, shapes, patterns, textures, colors and motion. Craig’s images are either single photographs or a composite of photographs combined to produce a non representational or abstract result.

Sheila Sondik only just recently moved Bellingham and her prints are a record of her wandering and explorations of her new home and studio. Sheila uses solarplate etching and various forms of monotypes to create her unique prints. She takes her inspiration from the natural environment and is interested in capturing the energy, mystery, and meaning beneath the surface beauty of what she sees.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ new Inside the Box Series will feature work from Naoko Kawakita. Naoko hand makes fanciful jewelry using sterling silver wire, Swarovski crystals, freshwater pearls, and precious stones. Her work has been sold in numerous boutiques in Whatcom County and was featured in the 2009 edition of Whatcom Weddings.

2010 Juried Artist Series: Remembrances
September 3rd thru 25th, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, Septemer 3rd, 6pm - 10pm

Gallery Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 12 to 5pm

The Allied Arts 2010 Juried Artist series continues with "Remembrances” featuring Ann Chaikin and Jeanne Levasseur. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday September 3rd, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artists from 6pm to 7pm on opening night.

Both the artists in this show depict moments and places frozen in time and convey the emotions of these places through oil paint and photography

Ann Chaikin’s work shown will consist of both photographs and paintings of the vacant Georgia Pacific site here on the Bellingham waterfront. Ann has been a photographer most of her life and many of her oil paintings come from the photographs she has taken. She decided to put together this body of work because of the importance of the Georgia Pacific plant in the history of Bellingham and its new role as a waterfront area of town that is still evolving.

Many of Jeanne Levasseur’s oil paintings are an internal reflection, depicting a scene or a moment in time, of the places she has traveled. She is particularly inspired and awed by the striking terrain as well as the tumultuous and temperamental skies of the Pacific Northwest. When beginning a painting, she initially relies on "plein-air”, photographs and memory, but shortly thereafter, spontaneity and intuition take over to become integral components of the process.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts’ new Inside the Box Series will feature work from Karin Mueller. Karin creates mixed media two and three dimensional works using found objects to create whimsical home décor items.

This show will run from September 3rd to 24th. Allied Arts is a non-profit gallery, proceeds from sales go to support the arts in our community.

For more information visit www.alliedarts.org or contact: Katy Borden, Artist Services Coordinator at 676-8548 x5 or katy@alliedarts.org.

2010 Juried Artist Series: Femme Fatale
August 6th thru 28th, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, August 6th, 6pm - 10pm
Gallery Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 12 to 5pm

The Allied Arts 2010 Juried Artist series continues with "Femme Fatale” featuring Katy Frank, Carmen Moise, Linda Hughes, and Kay Little. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday August 6th, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artist from 6pm to 7pm on opening night.

The show is titled after the personalities of these wonderful female artists; beautiful, strong and determined! These personalities are reflected in their work, which when together makes for an exciting and eclectic show of different media and subject matter.

Katy Frank creates collage compositions using content and images from high fashion magazines. Figures wear clothing made unrealistic materials - cut-out images of marble or fireworks - and are set against fantastical backdrops where ferns grow from the sky or jumbo flowers. Katy creates complex worlds where there is no shortage of stimulations - a world that anyone can escape to for as long as they like.

Carmen Moise’s love affair with photography started in high school and has continued into her adulthood. She photographs flowers and plants capturing the fragility and beauty of each subject. Carmen’s still life images are the result of in depth exploration and experimentation, to hopefully divulge both beauty and spirit.

Linda Hughes’ has developed a style of colorful embellishment for her hand thrown pottery which is nothing short of unique. Surfaces of pots are decorated with stripes, checks, or a series of interlocking circles which are surrounded by or filled in with an array of colorful flowers or leaves. Linda’s pieces are meant to be picked up, fondled and used on a daily basis and help their users dispel the grey months we endure in the Pacific Northwest.

Kay Little’s paintings are a result of using color, form and perspective to create a world of contradiction and allusion. She uses distortion of perspective to keep the viewer’s eye searching to understand the form. Kay’s goal is to hint at a form rather than literally reproducing it which allows the viewer to bring their own interpretation to the canvas.

In conjunction with this show, Allied Arts is introducing their new Inside the Box Series, an opportunity for artists to show smaller more affordable works inside our small jewelry cases here in the Allied Arts Gallery. Inside the box this month is glass artist Christine Grinstead. Her kiln fired glass pieces layer colors to add dimension and depth to her original usable pieces.

This show will run from August 6th to 28th. Allied Arts is a non-profit gallery, proceeds from sales go to support the arts in our community.

2010 Juried Artist Series: Interpretations

July 2nd thru 31st, 2010

Opening Reception: Friday, July 2nd, 6pm - 10pm

Gallery Hours: Monday thru Friday 10am to 5pm, Saturday 12 to 5pm

The Allied Arts 2010 Juried Artist series continues with "Interpretations” featuring Francie Allen and Sharon Kingston. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday July 2nd, from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artist from 6pm to 7pm on opening night.

The works presented in this show live up to the title "Interpretations”; the subjects are real but are presented in a way that is unique to each artist. Works are abstracted just enough to make the viewer interact with each piece.

Francie Allen is a newcomer to Bellingham, having spent most of her adult life sculpting, teaching and creating community art projects in Seattle. Her inspiration comes from years of improvisational dance, where she acquired a habit of waiting in stillness until a movement naturally arose. Francie’s wire and paper sculptures are figures shown in suspended animation dangling from the ceiling and clinging to the walls.

Sharon Kingston is an emerging artist working primarily in the medium of oil paint. Her painting style is that of a layered construction of abstracted color merging to form spaces suggestive of landscapes and interiors. The innate ambiguity of abstraction as opposed to representation allows her to explore the transformative process of making art, to seek a balance between inner and outer worlds. Sharon’s intentions are for subtlety; for a lushness and depth of color that engages the imagination and conveys a weight of emotional connection to atmospheres and places.

This show will run from July 2nd to 31st. Allied Arts is a non-profit gallery, proceeds from sales go to support the arts in our community.

He paints nautical scenes with clarity and emotion, using color and style to create these amazing works. 2010 Juried Artist Series: Couplings

February 5th thru January 26th, 2010

The Allied Arts 2010 Juried Artist series continues with "Couplings” featuring Allison Hoagland, Will Stokes, Jacquie Bresadola and Jeff Aspnes. The public is invited to the opening night celebration at the Allied Arts Gallery and the Downtown Art Walk: Friday February 5th from 6pm to 10pm. There will be an Exhibit Walk-Thru with the artist from 6pm to 7pm on opening night.

This show exemplifies what it is like to be a couple producing art together. Works shown will be both collaborations and pieces done individually. Sometimes the influences are apparent, sometimes they are not.

Jacquie Bresadola and Jeff Aspnes work compliment each other even when using completely different mediums. The beauty of Jeff’s photography is enhanced by the softness and mystery of Jacquie’s leather sculptures; although very different they fit together like the elements of the earth.

Alison Hoagland and Will Stokes work together on their glass pieces each bringing their personal elements of design to the work. Collaboration on their pieces gives them the opportunity to combine Will’s love of the realistic natural world with Alison’s ideas of abstract forms and colors.

2010 Juried Artist Series: Artists from the EDGE

January 8th thru January 29th, 2010

The Allied Arts – 2010 Juried Artist series kicks off with  "Artists from the EDGE” featuring Kristen Gilje, Joy S. Olney, Jane Penman, Tom Pickett, Steve Satushek, and Katherine Schneider.

This diverse group of local artists all participated in the EDGE professional practices program in the fall of 2008.
